United States (Frigate) logbook, 1815-1816.

The logbook or naval cruising journal of the frigate United States details a voyage from Boston to patrol in the Mediterranean, with numerous stops at the shipping ports of Algeciras, Barcelona, Cartagena, Mahon, and Malaga, Spain; Marseilles; and Algiers. The commander was John Shaw; the logbook keeper was Jesse Smith. The logbook includes notes on two burials at sea, deaths at sea, the funeral rite for one decedent, a notation on taking on a prisoner, episodes of privateering and capturing vessels at sea, raising the quarantine flag, the punishment of sailors on board (some for naval desertion), the rescue of one seaman overboard, and at least one worship program on board. The illustrations consist of two sketches of the order of the squadron.
